French agreement: build the noun phrase as a unit

Learn articles, nouns and adjectives together, then review past participles as a separate agreement problem.

French agreement becomes easier to manage when the noun, article and adjective are learned together. Treating each word separately leaves more decisions to make while speaking or writing.

Start with a complete small unit: une petite maison, un nouveau bureau, des idées intéressantes. Then practise changing the whole unit.

Keep gender and number visible

Learn a noun with an article that makes its gender clear. With an elided article such as l’, add another clue in your notes: une école, not only l’école. Then attach a useful adjective.

Starting formChanged form
le petit appartementles petits appartements
la nouvelle collègueles nouvelles collègues
un projet intéressantune idée intéressante

Not every feminine form is made by adding an audible final e, and plural forms do not always simply add s. Learn frequent irregular forms in meaningful examples rather than treating one pattern as universal.

Review agreement in a separate pass

When drafting, concentrate first on meaning. During revision, find each noun phrase and check the article, noun and adjective together. Reading aloud can reveal some changes, but many plural endings are silent, so visual checking remains important.

Choose one repeated error for focused practice. Rewrite a few relevant phrases correctly, then create new ones. Copying a correction without noticing the relationship between the words is less useful.

With many non-pronominal verbs using être, the past participle agrees with the subject: elle est arrivée, ils sont partis. With avoir, it does not generally agree with the subject: elle a mangé. A preceding direct object can change the analysis, and pronominal verbs have additional rules.

Do not apply one simplified rule to every compound tense. Build reliable noun-phrase agreement first, then study participle patterns with examples that make the grammatical relationships visible.
