Failing an exam is often not about your French.
It is about never having sat through three hours under real time pressure. About panicking in unfamiliar conditions. About drifting for two seconds during a listening track that plays only once, and never catching up.
So we set up a room just for mock exams. Every paper you take there follows the timing and procedure of the real exam.
What is in the exam room
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Dedicated room | Separate from the teaching area, with no classes scheduled in it on mock-exam days |
| Soundproofing | Listening plays once, with no noise from neighbouring classrooms |
| Headphones | 8 closed-back headphones, one per seat, with disposable ear covers |
| Timing | Projector or 65-inch TV: remaining time is always visible |
| Invigilation | An invigilator is present throughout every session, following real exam rules |
| Belongings | Phones go in a bag; watches and paper may not be brought in |
| Scratch paper | Provided, and collected at the end |
Why listening plays only once: in practice you can rewind. In the exam you cannot. If we changed this rule, a mock exam would just be more practice.
How a session runs
| Step | Duration | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 10 minutes | Check-in, ID check, storing belongings, rules read out |
| 2 | Real exam length | Listening, reading, writing (no interruption) |
| 3 | 10 minutes | Break |
| 4 | Real exam length | Speaking (one-on-one, recorded) |
| 5 | 40 minutes | Scores on the spot and section-by-section feedback |
You get your results the same day, not the following week. Right after the exam you are still here and the paper is still fresh, which is when feedback works best.
The score report
Each session produces a five-part report:
- Your four section scores and the total
- CLB conversion (NCLC in French): your current level (see also our CLB converter)
- Comparison with last time: what went up, what went down
- Where you lost points, by category: limited vocabulary, speed, running out of time, unfamiliar task types
- Next-step advice: keep pushing toward the exam, or build the basics first
Part 4 matters most. A mock exam that only gives scores is of little use; you need to know why you lost points.
