On October 19, 2024, Global French Education welcomed 40 participants to an open French class at 1 Bartley Bull Pkwy, Brampton, ON L6W 3T7. The session was intended for beginners and learners exploring practical French.

Giving a conversation something to build on

This everyday conversation class moved from greetings to questions about interests. The teacher helped learners organize words into complete sentences, making it possible to share information rather than simply name a hobby. The theme gave a common structure room to become personal, with different answers creating different directions for each exchange.

Putting the language into practice

Group practice was central to the session. It asked participants to use the structures with another person and attend to a reply. At beginner level, a brief conversation about music, sport or reading can provide valuable practice in turn-taking: answering a question, adding a detail and giving the other person space to respond.

A practice idea to take further

Start with J’aime lire. Add one detail, such as J’aime les romans, then ask Et vous ? Aim for an exchange with two speakers rather than a long speech about yourself.

A short exercise is most useful when you return to it. Revisit the exchange on another day, change one detail and notice what you can say without checking your notes. Use any remaining hesitation to choose a question for your next lesson.
