On March 16, 2024, Global French Education welcomed 19 participants to an open French class at 1 Bartley Bull Pkwy, Brampton, ON L6W 3T7. The session was intended for beginners and learners exploring practical French.

Greetings that lead somewhere

This open class focused on meeting someone: greeting them, asking how they were and introducing yourself. The teacher placed familiar expressions inside short everyday exchanges, giving learners a reason to use each sentence. Saying where you are from, for example, becomes more useful when it follows a greeting and invites a reply.

Putting the language into practice

Pair work connected speaking with listening. Rather than practising a greeting in isolation, participants took turns asking a question and responding. This is an important early habit: a conversation does not follow a script perfectly, and even a brief exchange requires attention to what the other person actually says.

A practice idea to take further

Practise Bonjour, comment ça va ? with two different replies: Ça va bien, merci and Ça va, et vous ? Notice how the second reply gives your partner a turn to speak.

A short exercise is most useful when you return to it. Revisit the exchange on another day, change one detail and notice what you can say without checking your notes. Use any remaining hesitation to choose a question for your next lesson.
