One French speaking question, two attempts

See the difference a concrete example and a relevant follow-up can make in a French speaking exercise.

In a speaking lesson, the most useful feedback often comes down to a single sentence. You gave an opinion, but where did you explain it? You mentioned a problem, but what would you actually do about it? Try the following practice question before reading the two answers.

The dialogue is a teaching example. The cover is an AI-generated classroom illustration.

The practice question

Une bibliothèque de quartier envisage de rester ouverte plus tard un soir par semaine. Est-ce une bonne idée à votre avis ? Expliquez votre position et donnez un exemple.

Take a minute to think and then speak for 30 to 45 seconds. These timings are for this exercise. If you record yourself, keep the first attempt so you can compare it with the second.

First attempt

Oui, je trouve que c’est une bonne idée. Beaucoup de gens travaillent et ils n’ont pas le temps d’aller à la bibliothèque. Il y a aussi les étudiants. Ce serait pratique pour eux. Donc je suis pour.

The position is clear from the start. The speaker names two groups who could benefit and gives a reason. But ce serait pratique asks the listener to fill in the details. Which people currently miss out? What would an extra evening let them do?

A teacher might point to that exact sentence and ask the speaker to replace it with a situation the listener can picture. Try doing that before looking at the second attempt.

Second attempt

Oui, je suis pour, surtout si la bibliothèque choisit un soir où beaucoup de gens travaillent jusqu’à dix-huit heures. Par exemple, une personne qui rentre à dix-huit heures trente pourrait passer emprunter un livre avec son enfant au lieu d’attendre le samedi. La bibliothèque pourrait essayer le jeudi soir pendant un mois, puis vérifier si les familles utilisent vraiment ce créneau.

The revision shows who benefits and how. It also offers a practical way to test the idea. Notice that the speaker uses the same basic position in both answers. The improvement comes from making the reason specific enough for another person to discuss.

Respond to a follow-up

Now imagine the teacher asks, « Et si la bibliothèque n’a pas assez de personnel ? » Try to respond to the new constraint. Here is one possible answer.

Dans ce cas, je commencerais par un seul jeudi par mois. Si la fréquentation est suffisante, la bibliothèque pourrait ensuite envisager une ouverture plus régulière.

On playback, check whether the first sentence responds to staffing or simply repeats your support for longer hours. Then choose one sentence you would keep and one you would change. On your second recording, make that single change and listen for the difference.
