When a strong mock result does not carry into the real test
Familiar topics and extra help can inflate practice results. Check conditions and look for consistent independent performance.

A practice result can be encouraging without being a reliable forecast. Familiar questions, flexible timing or generous feedback can all make a mock easier than the conditions it is intended to represent.
Use a mock as evidence, not a guarantee. Its value depends on how closely the tasks, conditions and assessment match the examination.
Check what was actually measured
Did you see the topic before? Did someone clarify the task during your response? Was the listening replayed when the real task would not allow it? These supports may be appropriate during learning, but they change what the result means.
Separate coached practice from a full simulation. Label each clearly in your own records so that an assisted performance is not mistaken for independent readiness.
Match the conditions that matter
| Condition | Useful check |
|---|---|
| Material | Use an unfamiliar task at the appropriate level. |
| Timing | Respect the section limits and permitted preparation. |
| Tools | Use only the aids allowed for that task. |
| Speaking | Respond to an actual partner, including follow-up questions. |
| Assessment | Apply a relevant rubric and retain specific feedback. |
Recording speaking can help identify repeated hesitations or unclear explanations. It does not mean every pause is penalized. The question is whether the performance meets the task and communicates effectively.
Look for consistency across attempts
One unusually good score may reflect a familiar topic; one weak result may reflect fatigue or a specific gap. Compare several unfamiliar tasks and review the pattern across all four skills.
After a simulation, choose a small number of priorities. Practise those outside test conditions, then use a different task to check progress. Repeating full mocks without targeted work can simply reproduce the same mistakes.
Readiness is better supported by stable independent performance than by the highest mark you have ever received. A mock should make the next preparation decision clearer, even when the honest conclusion is to allow more time.
