Missed a phrase in French? Keep listening

Listen to a short message about a changed appointment. Catch the new time even if part of the message goes by too fast.

You miss a phrase, try to translate what you heard, and by the time you catch up, the next sentence has gone by too. In this exercise, practise rejoining the message at the next point you recognize. The recording is a fictional voicemail about a workshop at a library.

The cover is an AI-generated illustration. The original French script is read by a synthetic Canadian French voice.

First listen — find the purpose

Play the message once without pausing or opening the transcript. Who is calling, and why? If you miss a detail, leave a dash in your notes and keep listening for a word that tells you what comes next.

Second listen — keep the new information

Listen again. Write down the workshop’s current start time and room. Then answer two questions. Who needs to bring a library card? By when should someone call if they cannot come?

Listen for on devait and finalement. The first introduces the original plan. The second signals a change. If you wrote down the first time you heard, leave it on the page and draw a line through it when you hear the replacement. That small move lets you keep listening without holding both times in your head.

Bonjour, ici la bibliothèque. Je vous appelle au sujet de l’atelier de vendredi soir. On devait se retrouver à six heures dans la salle du rez-de-chaussée. Finalement, l’atelier commencera à six heures et demie, dans la salle deux cent quatre, au deuxième étage. Le matériel est fourni, mais apportez votre carte de bibliothèque si vous voulez emprunter un livre après l’atelier. Si vous ne pouvez plus venir, appelez-nous avant midi vendredi. Merci, et à bientôt !

Answers. The library is calling about a change to Friday’s workshop. It now starts at 6:30 p.m. in room 204 on the second floor. Bring a library card if you want to borrow a book afterwards. Call before noon on Friday if you cannot come.

Use the transcript to diagnose one missed detail

Find the words that carried the answer you missed. If you know what six heures et demie means on paper, replay the phrase and focus on how the words run together. If you heard every word but wrote the wrong time, replay from on devait and listen for the change of plan. If rez-de-chaussée was new to you, learn it in context and listen again without reading.

Try one more uninterrupted pass. Afterwards, leave a short voicemail of your own changing the time or room of an appointment. Use finalement to signal the update, then say the new time clearly. A partner can listen once and tell you which time they wrote down.
