DELF, DALF and immigration tests: choose evidence for its purpose
A lifelong diploma and an approved immigration test serve different purposes. Check the receiving authority before booking.

A language diploma can be valuable without meeting the requirements of a particular immigration application. The expensive mistake is not choosing DELF or DALF; it is booking a qualification before checking where it will be used.
For Express Entry French evidence, use an approved test: TEF Canada or TCF Canada. A DELF or DALF diploma is not a substitute for that requirement.
Diplomas and tests answer different questions
DELF diplomas cover A1 to B2, while DALF covers C1 and C2. They certify achievement at a specified level. These diplomas remain valid for life, although a receiving institution or immigration program can impose its own conditions for accepting evidence.
TEF Canada and TCF Canada report assessed abilities using their testing frameworks. For Express Entry, the age of the results matters as well as the level achieved.
| Your purpose | First check |
|---|---|
| Express Entry application | IRCC’s approved tests and validity rules. |
| University or professional admission | The receiving institution’s exact requirements. |
| A lasting level qualification | Whether DELF or DALF matches the level and purpose. |
| Quebec immigration | The specific program’s accepted evidence and skill requirements. |
Avoid extending one rule to every application
“Not accepted for Express Entry” does not mean “useless for immigration everywhere.” Quebec programs have their own lists of recognized evidence. Equally, acceptance by one university does not establish acceptance by a different institution.
Keep a written record of the qualification name, version, required skills, minimum results and any recency requirement. Confirm details with the receiving authority if its wording is unclear.
Let the learning goal remain visible
Exam preparation works best when you know what the qualification is meant to demonstrate. Academic study may require sustained reading and structured argument; a test task may require a specific short interaction. These activities overlap, but they are not interchangeable.
Choose the evidence first, then the preparation pathway. This prevents good study time and examination fees being spent on a certificate that does not serve the intended application.
