Two-year language-test validity: plan the whole application timeline
Monitor validity through profile creation, the waiting period and application submission, with room for a retest if needed.

A language result can be strong enough and still be unusable because it is too old at the relevant application stage. Validity needs a calendar, not just a note saying “two years.”
For Express Entry, results must be less than two years old when you complete your profile and when you submit the permanent residence application. Check the precise test date and IRCC instructions.
Do not stop at the invitation date
Receiving an invitation does not freeze the validity of your language results indefinitely. If results will expire before you submit the application, assess the options under the current instructions before relying on them.
The relevant clock for IRCC’s requirement is tied to the test date, not the day you happened to download the report or read the email. Keep the original result details accessible, including the date, identification information and results for every ability.
Build a timeline with more than one milestone
| Milestone | What to check |
|---|---|
| Creating or updating a profile | Results remain valid and accurately entered. |
| Waiting in the pool | The expiry date is monitored. |
| Receiving an invitation | Results will meet the requirements at submission. |
| Planning a retest | Allow for bookings, results and possible further preparation. |
Do not infer a guaranteed result-delivery date from another candidate’s experience. Centres and providers publish their own arrangements, and delays can affect a tight plan.
Keep the distinction between qualification and acceptance
DELF and DALF diplomas are lifelong qualifications, but they are not approved substitutes for Express Entry’s French tests. Other institutions or programs may also impose recency conditions on evidence they accept. Always check the receiving authority, rather than generalizing from the certificate’s wording.
If your examination is approaching expiry, begin by checking actual readiness. A rushed retake may produce a weaker result. A manageable calendar leaves time to maintain your French, address weaker skills and obtain the evidence required at the relevant stage.
